New Jersey Deaf Housing

Update on NJDH Housing Project:  August 2026

  • October 21, 2026

For approximately 13 years, NJDH has advocated for accessible housing for Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing individuals in New Jersey. Despite years of advocacy, zoning, funding, and state housing requirements have presented significant challenges.

NJDH is now pursuing a new approach: purchasing suitable property and securing grants, corporate donations, and community support to develop housing for the Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing communities.

We are seeking property of at least two acres, preferably priced at $600,000 or less, in an accessible location near shopping, medical facilities, restaurants, banks, and other community services. South Jersey is currently a promising area due to its existing Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing population and convenient access to major roads.

In August 2026, NJDH met with the Egg Harbor Township Planning Board to discuss four potential properties. While the Board welcomed the concept of Deaf housing, it advised that the properties’ current zoning would make obtaining a variance difficult. The Board recommended focusing on properties zoned R4 or R5.

NJDH continues to search for suitable property and welcomes recommendations from the Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing communities. If you know of a property that may meet our needs, please contact the NJDH Board or email us at info@njdh.org.
